[SONNY] Headlines His First Show at The Penny Whistle
Rising Star SONNY headlines his first show in his hometown of Chicago at The Penny Whistle Tavern. When I arrived at the venue, I wasn't sure what to expect since I was unfamiliar with the space. However, after getting through security, it turned out to be a bar with a small stage at the back on one side and pool tables on the other. The small venue was perfect for SONNY's first headlining performance as he was able to walk around and communicate with friends, family and fans who came out to support, even getting up close and personal with the crowd during the acts before his own performance.
The opening act, F.A.B.L.E, had a full live band and opened with smooth Jazz and R&B songs. It was my first time hearing Jazz live, and it was definitely an experience. F.A.B.L.E ended his set with a song called "Broke," which he called the "star song of the album." It did not disappoint.
As the show progressed, more people started to arrive, some music lovers, some media, and others just looking for a night out. Regardless, the place was packed by the time the third act hit the stage. There were many performers, but two acts stood out to me: Vince Ash and BandHunta KT. Vince Ash started with Hip-Hop and Rap, then transitioned into smooth R&B to close out his performance. BandHunta KT, an artist with only 126 monthly Spotify listeners, caught my attention with his song "Pimpin Back," which features an iconic sample from the song "Still Tippin." BandHunta KT delivered a refreshing new sound and feel to the classic track. Overall he had perfect beat selection and delivery for every track I heard. I definitely see a great future for this young artist.
Finally, it was time for SONNY to hit the stage. This was my third time seeing him, and he did not disappoint. SONNY has an energy that takes over any venue and electrifies the crowd, especially with his song "BACKWOODS AND HOUSE SHOES." He also showcased his latest single "THROUGH EVERYTHING," which was released just 10 days prior. It was great to see SONNY at his own headlining show, and I was able to be front and center for the whole performance. SONNY is paving the way for his sound and style and will be a household name in 2023. I highly recommend seeing SONNY live if you ever get the chance.
